Golfing in Flint, Michigan is a popular pastime for locals and visitors alike. Flint has a wide variety of courses to choose from, with a number of them designed by well-known course architects. Famous golfers from the area have left a mark on the sport, both locally and nationally. The most popular public golf courses in Flint include the Flint Elks Club, Swartz Creek Golf Course, and the Captain's Club at Woodfield. The Flint Elks Club is a par-72, 18-hole championship golf course that opened in 1920. It features lush greens, ample bunkers, and water hazards on several holes. Swartz Creek Golf Course is a 9-hole, par-35 course that was designed by golf course architect Tom Bendelow. Captain's Club at Woodfield is a championship 18-hole golf course designed by renowned course architect Arthur Hills. Flint has been home to several famous golfers, including PGA Tour champion Rocco Mediate, four-time major champion Ernie Els, and LPGA Tour champion Meg Mallon. Mediate, who was born in Flint, won the 1991 Doral-Ryder Open and the 2003 FUNAI Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort. Els, the winner of four major championships, has been an active member of Flint's golf community, playing in many local tournaments. Mallon, who hails from nearby Swartz Creek, has won five LPGA Tour events, including the 2001 U.S. Women's Open. Golf course architects from or associated with Flint include Arthur Hills, Tom Bendelow, and Donald Ross. Hills is known for designing a number of well-known courses, including the Captain's Club at Woodfield. Bendelow, who designed Swartz Creek Golf Course, is credited with creating over 600 courses in the United States. Ross, who was born in Dornoch, Scotland, is known for designing many of the courses on the PGA Tour, including the Tam O'Shanter Country Club in nearby Davison. Although there are no famous moments in golf that happened in Flint, the city has long been a popular destination for golfers.
